Giuseppe
father died when Giuseppe was 41 years
old in 1951, and his mother died when he was 65 years old |

Giuseppe worked in Valletta from Monday to
Saturday then spent weekends in Gozo |

Giuseppe would work and send money back home to
his mother Caterina |
 |
Giuseppe was a skilled craftesman, carving stone
as a stone lace maker |
 |
His work included many decorations in many
different buildings, Churches, Government offices, theatres, and important
buildings in and around Malta and Gozo. His work can be found in the Lyceum
Theatre in Hamrun in Valletta city; in the Dragonaru Hotel in Malta; Xaghra
church around the Madonna copula |

He was taught to cut stone by his friend from
Valletta |

He and his brother Toni went into the army as
volunteers before WWII |
 |
However when WWII broke out, he was conscripted
to join the army as a soldier fighting.. He was then 27 years old and was
there for 5 years. |

He was awarded the George cross for Bravery with
the rest of the Maltese. He always prayed to the Madonna ta Pinu to protect
him. When the war finished the first place he went to was Ta Pinu church

When the war had ended he went back to Malta to
continue his stone carving- he was 33 years old. He was one of the finest
stone carvers the country had seen and here was much work for him.

On the
1/6/72 more than 200 sacks of asbestos fell on him and broke his two legs. He
was buried under the sacks for some time inhaling the asbestos. He was in
hospital from 1/6/72 until 26/9/72. He never worked again. He suffered many
years, with asbestos in his lungs. He was a smoker and needed to give up. Many
unskilled migrants worked in this factory, and many relatives have since died
from Asbestosis. |
