How did Vittoria and Joseph meet?
Vittoria met Giuseppe during the war time
| Vittoria was cleaning the bomb shelter which was where they lived during the war. The bomb shelter they stayed in was in the fields in Gozo in Xaghra and was once used a s a catacomb during Roman times, so there was no need to dig out any trench. At the time Vittoria needed to clean it and prepare it for their stay. She was 14 years old at the time and she was carrying bags of soil on her back, when Giuseppe saw her and asked if she needed any help. Vittoria said "no thanks I can manage myself". From that moment on, Vittoria fell in love with him. They would occasionally see each other during the period of some 7 years. They thoroughly enjoyed the festas together. They were not allowed to hold hands or anything physical during their courtship. Giuseppe asked Vittoria's father for her hand and he was most honoured to have his as a son-in-law. |

Giuseppe at the time was working as a stone carver in Malta, working 6 days a week, coming home on Sundays. He lived in a hostel in Hamrun. They both decided that a better life in Australia awaits them. They did not think Malta was where they wanted to be. This migration to Australia was encouraged both from the Australia opening its door to the Europeans. The passage to Australia has heavily subsidised by the British Government where by only had to pay $XXXX and the Maltese government were trying to control the population and this migration to Australia/Canada/USA was most suitable for the government.

He had acquired the property within 3 months of arriving. however with no house. Giuseppe then built a temporary dwelling, which had wooden planks and a tin roof.

Vittoria left for Australia on the 29th December 1955 on a German Boat called Aroza Qolm. Vittoria had 4 children:- Mary ann, Paulina, Josephine and Mary and pregnant with Cathy.

Vittoria was on the boat with her 4 children and pregnant for 7 weeks. They travelled via the Suez Canal.

Vittoria was coming from a tight knit village with all her family and friends around her and her familiarity. To arrive in this large, deserted rural area with miles and miles of open space and land between, was daunting for her. She struggled settling into to Sydney, and was ill for some months
|
However Vittoria was still pleased as they would have otherwise lived in the migrant shelters in the city which were very unfavourable. they lived in this temporary dwelling for almost 4 years
